The first thing you must do when installing a new shower is to carefully plan the steps that you will need to take. You will need to determine what type of shower will work best for the area you have available and ensure that it is compatible with the utilities currently have in your home. Check items such as are water mains, hot water heater, water pressure, piping, and drainage.
Types of Showers
There are several types of shower units available today, each having specific features, advantages, and disadvantages. Do your research prior to purchasing.
- Manual mixer
- Part of the wall unit.
- One or more knobs control pressure and temperature.
- More expensive than some other mixers.
- Additional plumbing needed.
- Electric Shower
- Heats the water electrically.
- Plumbed into the cold water main (which must have a pressure of at least 0.7kg/sq cm).
- Knobs adjust both temperature and pressure.
- The control knob has only high temp/low pressure or low temp/high pressure causing problems when water mains are cold.
- Some models have summer/winter option.
- Mixers
- Bath/shower mixers are inexpensive and require no extra plumbing.
- Push-on mixers are also inexpensive and simple to install. The hose connection comes off too easily and temperature controls may be awkward.
- Thermostatic mixers are the most expensive option but are able to automatically adjust the water temperature and the control is more convenient.
- Power showers
- SingleĀ unit
- Ability to adjust both temperature and pressure of water.
- Cannot be used for water heated directly by the shower.
- Cannot be used with a combination boiler under pressure from the main.
Steps for Installation
The following steps will get you on your way to a smooth installation.
- Ensure the shower head is fitted or has a check valve.
- Plan the pipe work and drainage system.
- Mark the position of the showerhead and the control.
- Consider the position of the cable route or shower switch (if applicable to the type of shower).
- Review your instruction manual for fitting the shower control.
- Shut off the water supply before fitting water pipes. Cover with waterproof material, fit with isolation valves, and conceal in the wall.
- Fit the tray and shower head.
- Connect the control to the water pipes.
- Reconnect the water supply and check for any leaks.
- Review instruction manual for electrical connections. Before making electrical connections, always double-check that power supply is off.
Water Pressure and Drainage
Lift the cold-water reservoir and raise the water main and distribution pipes to adjust the water pressure. Booster pumps are available as an option to increase water pressure. Connect the pump to the power supply before operating.
Use short, straight runs for drainage with as few elbows as possible. Bend pipes if needed. This will maintain optimal pressure and heat savings.
Miscellaneous Tips
- Pipes should not be too small.
- Follow all code requirements.
- Use proper fittings with pipes.
- Ensure everything is level and aligned correctly
