Upgrading a bathroom can add significant resale value to a property and contemporary bathroom design simply says “WOW”! Buzzwords used to describe the contemporary design are modern, simple, stark, polished, dramatic, shiny, minimalist, and transparent. Bathrooms are becoming beautiful works of art and, in some instances, stepping into a contemporary bathroom design is like taking a step into the future.
Interior designers have taught us that the best designs are the ones that focus on one element of a room that shows the rooms purpose. The entire design of the room centers on that one element. In today’s modern bathrooms, that is the bath.
Freestanding, sleek and stylish the bath has become a modern sculpture. Whether it takes the form of the modern version of the traditional claw-foot, a sculpted modernistic design, wood, or steel, the bath brings out the creative element of contemporary bathroom design.
To highlight the bath, designers place it in the location of the room where it will draw attention, free from any walls or constraints. It is unique and individual. Entering the bath in a modern bathroom is entering another world where one is free to allow their imagination to take over.
However, one item receives as much focus as the bath and that is the shower. In a contemporary bathroom design, the two appear to be competing for the top spot making it a difficult choice come bath time. In large rooms, modern showers are oversized, appearing large enough to hold a gym class and allowing the user unrestricted movement. Many contemporary showers have multiple showerheads and varying streams of water.
With both the bath and shower as the central point of the room, other features remain in the background accentuating the contemporary design. Background features typically consist of simple lines. Plain tiles or polished concrete set off the room with a modern flair. Stark white features with splashes of color or polished silver and mirrored glass, provide us with a look that tells a story.
The taps of the bathroom tend to reflect the look and style of the bath. They should be simple and sassy and many times are seen rising from the floor or somehow materializing from the wall.
The use of dramatic shades of color draws attention to the modern look of the design. Designers creatively use emboldened, glossy black to highlight the bath. Black polished concrete with glossy black walls give a futuristic look when accentuated by stark white elements.
According to designers, the rule of contemporary bathroom design is that less is always more. Only the essentials are in sight and clutter is a word never spoken when referring to the modern bathroom. Clean, simple, futuristic, and luxurious, contemporary design is limited only by our imagination.
