Installing your new bath will go smoothly if you follow the basic steps discussed in this article. Plan your work before beginning the installation and keep in mind that you will need to modify the pipe work before putting the bath in position if you will be placing it in a location other than that of the original bath.
Prior to Installation
- Assess the desired location of the bath and determine if you will need to install any new pipe work.
- Measure the positions for all of the components and mark the wall with a pencil to ensure accurate placement.
- If necessary, run any new pipes or spurs to prepare for the installation of your new bath.
Preparing the Bath and Location
- Ensure the leg positions and their heights are correctly fitted.
- Attach the feet by turning the bath upside down taking care not to scratch the exterior.
- If you are installing a plastic bath, you will need to fit the supporting frame.
- Fit the taps before positioning the bath. Once the bath is in place, it will be too difficult.
- Fit the waste and overflow. The waste is what opens to let the water out of the bath and the overflow keeps it from flowing out if overfilled. Depending on what type you have, either a banjo or a compression unit, you will need to fit the overflow section before the trap or simply fit the unit directly into the trap.
- Determine the weight of the tub filled with water and add a person’s weight to this. You may need to strengthen the floor with plywood to increase the amount of weight it will support. You can also place boards under the legs to distribute the weight evenly if desired.
Installing the Bath
- Minimize any movement between the bath and the wall. The bath should remain solidly in place in order to give you a long-lasting, effective moisture seal.
- Ensure the bath is level by measuring, leveling, and then marking with a pencil along the wall.
- Make any necessary height adjustments.
- Do a final check to ensure the bath, along with its components, is completely level.
- Create a waterproof seal between the bath and the wall to avoid any future dampness or mildew formation with a bead of silicon mastic sealant. Ensure the area is dry and free from any dirt or dust prior to sealing.
- Use a clean, damp cloth to remove any additional residue and allow to dry completely.
The installation of your bath should be relatively painless for the development of your bathroom and error free if you understand the steps above. Follow the instructions that come with your new bath and contact a professional if you have any questions on the installation.
